The heartwood of some Ash trees has nice dark-on-light stripes that resemble Olive wood. We use mostly this part of the timber that is not only beautiful but also dense and strong, which helps with the resonance of the instrument and the rigidity against the string tension.

After we give the wood a general shape we achieve the unique texture of the instrument by carving all its surface with small radius gouges.
We finish the instrument with a few coats of Shellac. We use natural colored shellac for our ash instruments which ads a yellow – orange layer of color to the brown hues of the wood.
